Moving with Exercise Equipment: Here’s How to Do It Like a Pro

  • by

Moving exercise equipment is never an easy task; most equipment was designed to be heavy and sturdy. As such, properly planning, disassembling, and utilizing the right tools are that much more important for a successful move when dealing with exercise equipment. Regardless of the equipment you need to move and how far it needs to travel, there are some good universal tips and tricks. If you’re moving exercise equipment from your home or business soon, keep these tips in mind:

Step 1: Decide What Equipment is Worth Moving

When planning a move, deciding what to bring is always a tough choice. Especially with heavy exercise equipment, deciding what is worth moving makes a major difference in time and space investments. Consider if you use the equipment at all or if there is a plan for its destination. If you never use a piece of equipment, and don’t have a set destination for it, perhaps finding a different home for it is the best practice.

Step 2: Clean and Prepare Your Exercise Equipment

For the equipment that is making the journey, cleaning and preparing said equipment should come before any moving happens. Often, popular exercise equipment has a degree of preparations needed to safely move them, but those exact steps will vary from machine to machine.

Step 3: Disassemble What You Can

Many pieces of exercise equipment can be disassembled to various degrees. Almost always, being able to disassemble your equipment will make the move much easier as you usually have smaller, lighter pieces left to maneuver. This can also save your equipment and surrounding environment from damages.

Step 4: Protect the Equipment (and Your Floors)

Protecting your exercise equipment is another key piece of moving. Fragile screens, hinge points, and connecting pieces can be more at risk for damages while moving. Removing these bits, or protecting them during the move, is huge for the safety of your equipment. At the same time, moving the larger, heavier pieces of equipment also puts your floor in danger. Opting for padding along the desired route can be huge for saving the equipment and the home.

Step 5: Using the Right Moving Equipment

Especially for these extremely heavy exercise equipment, getting your hands on the right tools makes a major difference. Here are some proper tools that make the job much easier:

Furniture dollies and sliders

Dollies and sliders are small features that can make a major difference depending on where your move has to go. For moves across flat surfaces, these guys are fantastic.

Moving straps for heavy machines

For heavy machines and moving up/down stairs, moving straps are another tool that makes a major difference in a move. To get more control and leverage over these huge equipment, moving straps are the way.

Protecting delicate electronics and screens

While most of an exercise equipment piece may be heavy and rugged, many often have a delicate electronics component or a screen that is fragile in the context of a move. Protect these electronics by removing them, wrapping them in padding, and by being conscious of them during the moving process.

Step 6: Move Heavy Machines Safely

With various sizes and shapes of machines, the best moving tactics will be situationally-dependent. Often, the size of equipment warrants at least two people, and/or having the proper tools on hand, to help with the move. Here are some of the common exercise equipments and how best to move them safely:

Treadmills and folding machines

Treadmills and a select few other machines often fold up nicely for an easier move. Unplugging, folding, and locking your treadmill is the safest and most secure way to safely transport it. The length of treadmills usually requires an additional person to move safely.

Weight racks and benches

While tedious, removing all plates/weights and disassembling the frame is the best practice for moving weight racks and benches. Dollies can thrive in particular for picking up many of the heavy pieces that will need to be moved.

Stationary bikes and ellipticals

Stationary bikes and ellipticals often don’t fold or disassemble as much as other equipment. For these, start by removing what pieces you can. Ensure your electronics/screens are thoroughly protected. Often coming with wheels, having multiple people manage the moving of a stationary bike for longer distances is best practice.

Step 7: Load Equipment Correctly on the Moving Truck

Often being quite heavy and awkward, loading exercise equipment properly in the moving truck for a drive is essential. You’ll want to ensure that all pieces are thoroughly strapped down using tools like ratchet straps. Loose equipment can cause a tremendous amount of damage to the truck, other belongings in the space, and the people around.
