How to Move a Couch

Moving your couch can be a troublesome task if you’re unprepared. Prep and Plan

Every task is always easier when you have a plan in mind. Moving your couch is no different. Make sure you know exactly where you’re moving it before you start, and definitely try to map out a route to move your couch to wherever it’s going. To properly map out this path, you’re going to need to measure the couch beforehand, so you know exactly which doorways it can fit through and how much space you might need to clear a corner. You’re also going to need some supplies, depending on where you’re moving it to, and how heavy it is. Things like a dolly, lifting straps, and furniture sliders, or wrapping material, which we’ll talk more about later, will likely be useful. Finally, assemble your helper team. Couches are heavy, you’re going to need a few people to help you move yours.

Wrapping Your Couch

We briefly mentioned furniture sliders, and wrapping materials in the last section. These are essential when moving your couch, no matter where it’s going, to avoid damaging it, and the things around it. If you’re only moving the couch around your home, then a furniture slider might be enough, as it will protect your floor, and the couch as you move it. However, if you’re moving it out of the house, then moving blankets, or stretch wrap will be very important to have. These will protect your couch during transit. To wrap your couch, first start by totally disassembling it. Remove any pillows, blankets, and cushions and wrap them up separately. Then, take off the legs and arms of the couch if you need to for the couch to fit through doorways. Be sure to store any screws and the legs in a safe place for reassembly later. Finally, wrap the couch from the bottom up and tape each end with packing tape to keep it from unwrapping.

Moving Your Couch

Now that you’ve got your plan in place, and your couch is wrapped and ready to go, it’s time to lift and carry. Always lift with your knees, and don’t raise the couch too high. You and your lifting partners should always keep the couch low and close to your body for full control. Using a dolly here can help simplify the process, making it a lot easier to move the ouch around, if you don’t have one though you’re going to have to be ready for a few different scenarios. Getting around corners may require a tilt or a pivot, while a narrow doorway may require the same or even more effort. Stairs are a whole other challenge. Get a partner involved and communicate constantly as you ascend or descend the stairs and be aware of the couch’s weight beforehand.

Transporting Your Couch

After you’ve gotten your couch out of your home, it’s time to get it into your vehicle. Make sure you have a vehicle that can accommodate the couch like a moving, or pickup truck. Lift the couch carefully once again and ease it into your vehicle. A slider can help here, if you put it in your car, then load the couch on top of it and pull it the rest of the way into your vehicle. Be sure to secure it once it’s in by strapping it down so it doesn’t get damaged during the drive.

Unloading Your Couch

Once your couch makes it to its new destination, simply unload it from your vehicle and follow the same tips as before to maneuver it into its new spot. Just like that, your new couch should be safe and sound in its new place.
